We live in a social and professional environment that generates enormous stress and tension, driven as it is by a frantic search for efficiency in which electronic gadgets such as cellular phones and handheld computers run our lives. It has got to the point where nothing is free of interference from our gadgets, including socialising with friends and family and lovemaking, all in the name of a vague notion of "client service". Isn't it time for us to rethink our priorities and redirect our energies to pulling back, thinking, and resting?
This is a new world in which different values clash, leaving us wondering which is the right way to do things. We need to reflect on our choices. To do so requires that we take notice of the various visions and cultures that have taken us where we are and learn about their respective strengths and weaknesses. We need to understand why our quest for "performance" dominates our lives and why we have forgotten how to rest and relax.
